Essential Community Support
The charity provides additional support in response to political, economic, and environmental change to the individuals and families who are in the most desperate need.
Food Relief
Over the years, a large number of the community in Rwanyana have been pushed into food poverty during the most challenging times. The Covid lockdown, which started in March 2020, meant that many people who had relied on trading some of their meagre crops in the nearest town were unable to do so.
To compound matters, in April 2020, disaster struck, unprecedented storms caused landslides, which destroyed homes and crops. Thanks to our generous supporters the charity has been able to pay for food relief for some extremely hungry people. We were also happy to provide food parcels for some of the school children and their families throughout the pandemic. Since then we have had initiatives to provide food parcels at difficult times including Christmas.
Housing Relief
The charity has been able to fund some housing repairs and emergency rentals for families whose houses have been damaged or destroyed in storms or landslides. Something that is increasing in frequency due to climate change.
We also took the unprecedented decision to fund the total rebuild of a family home for one of the poorest families in the village, which was completely destroyed. The new home is built of wattle and daub and consists of a house with a separate kitchen building, where cooking on a charcoal burner will take place, and a separate latrine.
This will be life changing for this family who can now be together instead of living scattered around the homes of various relatives.
Emergency Aid
The charity prides itself on being responsive to the needs of the community. In conjunction with the clinic, we provide an emergency medical and travel fund. Whilst most medical care in Uganda is free, actually getting to hospital from such a remote area is too costly for many villagers.
The emergency medical fund is used to pay for travel to hospital, often by motorbike taxi, and it has also supported children to have serious operations by paying for the medical care and accommodation for their guardians. Two of our sponsored children have ongoing medical conditions that are supported by the fund. Kakuru has had procedures to save her sight and Susan has received operations and prosthetics to help her walk.
