Sustainability

We are passionate about improving access to sustainable resources, including water harvesting and solar power, which will offer the community long-term solutions.

Water

As a result of our efforts, the community now boasts a large tank collecting water from the roof of the children’s hostel and also one collecting water from the new clinic. These are an essential component of sustainable living for the community.

Also, in 2019, and with the support of Wollaton Park Rotary Club, Nottingham, a large underground tank with a capacity of 25,000 litres was constructed. This harvests water from the classroom roofs providing water for hygiene needs and the cooking of school meals.

These facilities are life changing for the community as previously water had to be carried 2 ½ km uphill from a spring near Lake Bunyoni.

Solar Power

One of the most exciting developments has been the installation of solar panels on some of the properties in the community. A generous donation has enabled us to install solar panels on the building that houses the children’s hostel, enabling the hostel children to read and study in the evenings. Life changing!

We are also delighted to have been able to provide solar power in around 120 households, which has caused enormous excitement in the village! Having light can be life changing for the residents of Rwanyana because, being near the equator, it gets dark around 6pm all year round. For only £50 per house, children are able to study in the evenings, meals can be cooked and crafts can be pursued, many of which are a vital source of income for people in the community.

We are actively seeking funding to extend this facility to as many households as possible. If you would like to help, please click here to donate.

Practical Skills

During the Covid lockdown we purchased a knitting machine, two sewing machines and carpentry tools for the older children to learn practical skills with. Now some of the sponsored young people are attending technical college for garment making, and they have been producing school uniforms for the children during the holidays. Here is Adrine making school dresses.
